acer aspire 3810t 3810tz 3810tg lcd backlight broken, not working

This laptop has a problem with the lcd backlight leds. I read all over the net people complaining about their lcd, about one or all leds not working.

The lcd unit is "AUO B133XW01 V2" (acer p/n LK.13305.002) as you can see in the following picture.

Acer knows about this problem, and if was notebook still has warranty they will replace your screen with "lg LP133WH2-TLA3" (acer p/n LK.13308.002) , so you won't have this problem in the future.

Mine was out of warranty so i had to buy a new lcd (120$ from China) or repair the broken one.

  REPAIR !
If you don't know how to take out the screen, check this page.

The problem actually is the flex that goes to the backlight, because of the  angle and the heat, the paths inside the flex will be destroyed.

The flex has 6 wires. 4 of them are for each led. I managed hardly to repair somehow this flex, don't know how much it will last considering the led consumpion is 4W on such tiny paths.

Here is the result:

  12. @tom : no, that is the motherboard-lcd cable. the faulty cable is the lcd-backlight which is not replaceble. you need to solder it like i did, or get a new lcd (around 100$)

  14. Hi, @Cristi. thanks great to hear back from you.

I've not done something like this before, but just to confirm what you've done, I guess you soldered carefully along each of the six paths on the flex, and then covered with insulation tape? I could give it a go... trust you but not me to do this right!

If it doesn't work, was this the screen you you refer to (it's seems to say HP, but I guess it's something like OEM or compatible..)

    with appreciation
    Tom

    1. I ordered this replacement screen but it arrived with the wrong shaped brackets for my Aspire 3810TZ. This means that the screen is unable to clip back into the laptop lid making the bezel almost impossible to reattach.

    2. It is important to state the version number stated immediately after the model number. The 3810tz uses version 2 screens as shown above. Older versions may have different brackets.

  17. OK, makes sense. wish me luck! and thanks for the ebay component no.

  19. Perfect! Thanks a lot. I used 30 gauge wire and offset the soldering locations (to avoid short). 2 hr work for $80.

  20. Hello, i have an Acer Aspire 3810tz-414g32n since 2009. A few months ago, i experienced some trouble with the backlight on the right side of my screen. http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/421/93946241.jpg Then, it was getting worse. Hopefully, i found this post. I dismantle the screen and notice that the flex was broken on the fold. http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/878/76124172.jpg
I couldn't repair it, so i buy the lg LP133WH2-TLA3, replace the screen and it works perfectly. Thanks for the post dj cristi.

  21. Firstly a big thanks .. I have the 3810TZ-413G32n. The screen went dark so you could only just make out it was working in the right light. Obviously an ACER issue that being the back-light stops working and probably due to the ribbon cable as shown which was extremely weak when I removed the old one and easily broke. Old screen "B133XW01 VO CTRL BD" on front when removed bezel ... back of screen "B133XW01 V.2". Ordered LK.13308.002 straight off ebay £46.50 inclusive. Fitted works perfectly. Easy to do just have to be careful removing the bezel otherwise a breeze. Thanks again DJ.

  22. Thank you for the great money saving idea to repair the backlighting cable DJ Cristi. Definitely worked for me. I wish I found your site before I bought the other ribbon cable from Ebay tho. You can see the resulting pics from my repair as well at:

  23. Very helpful, thanks! After some experimentation with my LED cable, I managed to repair my screen by putting 2 layers of thin cardboard in between the fold of the cable. This made the fold less sharp and reconnected my 2 faulty backlights.

    1. hi any chance you could explain how you did this? I attempted it today and restored this screen at first, but only partial backlights working. On opening/shutting the screen a few times it failed, so obviously the cardboard has to be placed very precisely, and secured in position. Just wondering how you did it?

a couple of pics of my screen and how i've inserted cardboard - sorry the quality is not great: http://3810fix.wordpress.com/2012/10/20/3/

    2. thanks for the cardboard tip!
i did mine with a folded piece of paper!
it works a charm. I have had this problem for a year or so. A computer repairs place told me it would cost over $200 to repair! and thanks to this post i saved that much in less than 10 Minutes!

    3. TOM: the reason my one worked only with a piece of paper is because the cable did not seem to be damaged at all. So i simply placed the folded paper in between the folded part of the cable.
maybe your one needs to be partially soldered

  26. BTW, the Acer TM8371 has the same display and thus problem.
Tried conducting silver successfully, but cable broke independently in an other place.
Will try soldering an other cable in between the two fractures tomorrow.

  27. Excellent post, thanks. I fixed the flex cable, and got it to work when I really needed. But I did not do a very clean job, so after working for the last 9 months it is broken again, I will order now a new screen. I suggest everybody to at least try to fix it following the instructions in this post.

    2. That's an external cable used to connect the LCD panel to the laptop's mainboard.

Meanwhile, the current blogpost is about internal screen backlight cable damage.

  29. I just carried out this fix and it worked a treat. It was pretty nerve wracking but it all worked out in the end! One thing that I would add is to buy some very thin gauge enameled wire or silicon wire as there's not a huge amount of space in there. I did all of the wires (couldn't see which was broken) and wired the main power section which has 3 strands at the plug directly to the socket. All the other ones I wired to scraped off areas at the beginning and end of the ribbon cable.

  36. You just saved me the cost of a new LCD (or throwing away the laptop). When i first opened up the computer, only one of the connections was bad, but after disconnecting it from the connector, all 6 broke. Reconnected them by soldering 6 tiny insulated cables.

    Thanks a lot!

  37. I have been browsing online more than 4 hours today, yet I
never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth
enough for me. In my view, if all website owners
and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet
will be much more useful than ever before.
